Italian industrial (loft) style with Paola Navone

Paola Navone is, as you already might know one of my favorite designers out there, and she finally took over this project though she does not work on private homes. Who wonders?

Two centuries ago this warehouse located in Umbria, Italia used to be a silkworm farm, and then later a tobacco drying plant. It went under some serious makeover to be that stunning living space that it is today.

What I particularly like about this home, is the use of the ceramic tiles in the living area, bath and kitchen (last pic). And then there is this XXL white sofa from Gervasoni…

Update: What a nice surprise! I just read the Elle Decoration UK issue from April during lunch, and there you will find an article with beautiful images of the entire project.

Paola Navone’s Parisian Apartment

I have “met” Paola Navone last year at a great panel together with Patricia Urquiola during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Since then I am a big fan. And I have recently visited Merci in Paris. She opened the Italian version last year in Milan together with art director Daniel Rozensztroch. Paola designs driven by her extreme interest in the most widely differing cultures – particularly oriental ones – but she works as well as an architect, art director, interior designer, critic, teacher and organiser of exhibitions and events. Among her clients are Gervasoni, Armani Casa, Knoll International, Alessi, Driade, Arcade, Dada, Molteni, Natuzzi, Roche Bobois and Swarovski being only some examples. And now her apartment in Paris there has been published at Côte Maison. Amazing! The whole shooting reminds me of the Merci Store in Paris last week!

One of the colour trends I have been spotting has been a shy black and white again at brands such as Gervasoni, Molteni, Porro, Minotti.

In fact, it is a natural evolution. We started like 6 years ago when everything was very black and baroque, from this time you still see many Retail concepts: shops with black walls, floors and furniture. Then we had a b&w movement that leaded us to the total look of white which is still quiet extended. We talk white now for at least 3 years, so a slight change towards b&w is just normal. I still love white and hope we have it for a long time to come!

Italian brand Gervasoni is usually quite colorful at the Salone but this time they went for a calmer overall look at their stand with many greys and b&w´s. Paola Navone who I had the pleasure to listen to at a trend conference in Milan, had designed quiet a few pieces for them. She is one of the main design responsibles too at the Merci Store in Paris and now at Milan too.

Conference Be Open (Creative Think Tank) at Milan

I attended yesterday during the Salone the Conference Be Open with the topic of “Unique&Universal”. Francesco Morace from the Future Lab Concept (first pic) would open the conference and he was one of the main reasons I switched part of the Salone. I saw him a couple of years ago at the Barcelona Design Week and it was then when my passion for trends with a social aspect was born.

The basic idea in a few sentences would be that everything in a first moment is local. The question is how to translate that to the world. The more unique you are, the more accepted you will be if you guarantee quality. With social media you can be nowadays local and global at the same time. Local talents can be easily found, briefed and put into the world. I could write pages and pages about the content but that´s probably a bit out of place here. So, here goes a couple of slides with a sum up of the topic. I believe it is interesting enough to share (and really good information if you are interested in trends), specially the second one.

But apart, the panel of speakers was very promising too. From left to right:
Ilse Crawford, Designer and Creative Director
Daniel Rozensztroch, Art Director Merci Paris
Paola Navone, Architect and Designer
Patricia Urquiola, Architect and Designer
Stuart Parr, Designer and Entrepreneur
Gaetano Pesce, Architect and Designer

I was specially interested in Paola and Patricia, two very different women, strong and grounded I have admired for a long time. I liked very much the 3 women´s approach in general. I don´t have any gender prejudice, I just believe they were much more focused with clearer ideas. Here goes a picture of them all together.
